How to Question the Rules

NOTE: There’s a video below. If you’re reading this post via RSS, Facebook, or email, you may not be able to see it… in which case you should click through to the post on my blog.

I recorded this video post because I’m feeling far too lazy to spend several hours right now to write a post. Besides, I’ve never truly done a video post before. So — okay, this is about me being an innovator, then. Yeah. Forget the “lazy” thing.

Anyway, check it out. I talk about what it really means to be a DIY, rule-questioning entrepreneur, and why you need to watch your ass if you actually want to be successful at it instead of just being a broke-ass punk.

When you’re done, check out the new site for our course, Question the Rules: The nonconformist’s punk rock, DIY, nuts-and-bolts guide to creating the business and life you really want, starting with what you already have. That’s going to kick a metric ton of ass, and it launches April 28th. Be sure to sign up so that you can get it early and get it cheap.

(Oh, and you’ll get a bonus interview just from signing up that might just kick your biz into high gear. Go get it now.)

So, here’s the video:

My ears, they are BURNING. ;)

You rock, Lee rocks, and I am absolutely ECSTATIC to work with you both.

  2. There’s a new Kool-Aid you guys are drinking, and we older entrepreneurs need to drink some too! This was a one-two punch after just finishing Godin’s Linchpin. I may not be “weird” enough to hang with you guys for any length of time, but I know a good dose of your attitude is contagious and will help me be more authentic and more resistant to what I call “The Tyranny of Shoulds” (I should do this or I should do that). Good luck with your new product launch!

I don’t think you have to be weird. I just think you have to not live by default. There’s a certain deep realization I think most of us can reach or have reached where we suddenly get, “Oh, I don’t have to do it the way ANYONE says I should.” And you may fail, but you kind of fail on your own terms. I personally find it super-liberating to realize that there’s one hell of a lot of freedom outside those lines!

  4. A absolutely. I knew you weren’t really trying to say you had to be weird, but it was a great visual to get your point across. Most of us who might be a little too stuffy could use more weird in our lives :-) .

Living life on your own terms sounds so simple, yet it is so important, and of course it “looks” different for each one of us (thank God!). Thanks for the great reminder.

  5. Maren Kate says:

It is so much easier to record a video!! I’ve been doing that lately as well :) ha, laziness can pay off!

  6. Jess says:

“Uncertainty is the path to freedom.”

Love it… I can hardly wait to hear the modules.

Oh, and Elizabeth: I saw your comment and checked out your site. GREAT stuff. I really dig what you wrote about being a seeker… I swear, I find the coolest people through Johnny’s comments… :)

  7. Dave Doolin says:

Thank you for admitting that it takes several hours to write a good article.

Between learning Facebook and video, I have a lot of work to do.

  8. Johnny says:

Absolutely… some posts go quick, but some of those bastards take forever. I’ve had Copyblogger posts take most of a day.

  9. Devon Jordan says:

Not going to lie, i love this video.

Thanks for keeping me positive about where I’m going with life. I’ve shared this with my entrepreneur club @ CSU Fullerton as well.

  10. Johnny says:

    That’s so awesome. Thanks!

  11. Looks like an interesting course. I’ve been thinking a lot about things I don’t want to do, “questioning the rules”, but as you say, I haven’t thought much about what I want to do.

That’s the really hard part, and that’s why your course is a very interesting one and why I signed up to be notified as soon as you are ready to launch.

  12. Johnny says:

Yep, that’s the problem… “Don’t follow this” kind of leaves you hanging as to what the hell to do!

  13. Yup, yup. I AM a weirdo.

  14. Kat says:

O…M…G! Your video is proof positive that the Universe works in truly mysterious ways…I do not believe in “accidents”. Not one bit. I’ve been thinking and contemplating on how to make my way in the world as a musician, writer, and overall creative/artsy person, but one of the odd things about being a creative person is that everyone else’s super-planned, super-organized, ducks-in-a-row thinking just doesn’t match up with my rather “ADHD” brain-flow. On top of this, I do NOT plan on doing typical mainstream music. (I’m a Yes-head by the way, and pretty much a devout follower of their front man, Jon Anderson, whose own way of being is far from ordinary!)

So when I found this particular post–whilst searching for humor blogs—I thought, “Wow! Just…Wow!” This is precisely what I have needed…confirmation and reassurance that I am not alone in my weirdness, my desire to question the rules.

Dunno if I’ll sign up for the course just yet, but you’ve at least got me thinking.

Love the energy of this blog by the way! It has a freshness I’ve not seen in “entrepreneurial” business blogs in a while! I am definitely bookmarking it!

    Thank You!
    Kat ^.^

  15. I’m a rule breaker. Let’s go.

  16. Hi Johnny,

Love the content you discuss in the video!
Just “discovered” you today via your guest shot on Marie Forleo’s blog.

Dig the look and feel of your blog & will definitely go check out your
    Question the Rules.

Hope you get back to posting more often!

    Michael

  17. Johnny says:

Awesome! Glad you dug it. That post got a lot more action than I had anticipated… which is quite a nice thing…

  18. Darcy says:

Let’s hear it for laziness. I enjoyed the video post because it’s sometimes easier to listen than read the same way it is easier to talk than write. And the piece about avoiding the not doing something pitfall is the kind of thing that I can stand to hear many times, so thanks for that.
